Hotels along Sibley Street in St. Paul in the 1890s

Hotels Along Sibley Street

In this history video, visitors are made aware of some recently discounted rooms in the back portions of the wooden Sherman Hotel (326 Sibley Street) after a nighttime fire had broken out. The fire was caused by a carelessly placed lamp and the fire was not a case of arson. Fires are common in hotels, but hotel deaths are much more common through accidental gassing. Not fully understanding how to use gas room lighting systems can be potentially fatal for many travelers. Two guests from Brainerd, Minnesota learned this firsthand while staying at the Sherman.

Visitors to St. Paul’s Banner Hotel (452 Sibley Street) can learn from the sad experience of Mr. Waddell who lost a nice amount of money to conmen and cardsharps. This could be a common plight for many passengers who get approached on train platforms of the Union Depot by strangers and end up getting financially fleeced.

A very odd theft was solved at Mrs. Weeds Boarding House (502 Sibley Street) which involved the fencing of stolen jewelry and dental equipment.
